Refrigerator Not Cooling? What should you do?

A warm refrigerator needs quick attention, but it does not always mean the cooling system has failed. First, place an appliance thermometer inside and avoid opening the doors unnecessarily. A refrigerator should generally be kept at 35°F to 38°F. An unopened refrigerator can keep food safe for about four hours during a power outage; perishable food that has been without safe cooling for longer may need to be discarded. Never taste food to decide whether it is safe.

Safe checks:

1) Confirm that the plug is secure and the interior light or display works.

 2) Check that the temperature was not accidentally changed.

 3) Move packages away from interior air vents.

 4) Wipe the door seal and look for gaps, tears, or food preventing closure.

5) If the manual permits it, unplug the refrigerator and vacuum accessible dust around the lower or rear coil area. We recommend keeping seals airtight, allowing airflow around the appliance, and following the manual when cleaning coils.

6) Call professional. Keep the doors closed, record the temperatures, and note any sounds or error codes.

If cooling does not return after the safe checks, request a diagnosis before food loss becomes more expensive.

Immediately stop and call professional if you notice:

 1) smoke, sparks, or a burning smell;

 2) a hot or damaged plug or cord;

 3) rapidly rising temperatures after the basic checks.

FAQ

How long should I wait after changing the temperature? Follow the exact manual. Temperature changes are not always immediate, but food safety should be monitored rather than assumed.

Can I clean refrigerator coils myself? Only if the manual identifies them as user-accessible. Unplug the appliance first and avoid refrigerant tubing or electrical covers.

Should I keep opening the door to check the temperature? No. Keep the door closed as much as possible and use a refrigerator thermometer.
